The merging of the natural and the metaverse was a key point of consideration during the selection of Pantone’s Colour of the Year. And this time around, it is Veri Peri, a dynamic periwinkle blue with red undertones that will define 2022!

The past two years have been challenging, and as we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our physical and digital lives have become more intertwined. This fact resulted in the search for new colour possibilities that will define this new reality in fashion, cosmetics, skincare, and art.

According to Pantone’s colour panel, Very Peri illustrates the fusion of modern life and how colour trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical realm and vice versa. Historically, blue is beloved by many, but by adding a red velvet undertone, a feeling of dynamism, imagination, movement, and creativity is achieved, and it brings a fresh approach to traditional blue hues.

As a colour, Veri Peri is often found in the digital space – it is also abundantly found in nature in the form of milk thistle and periwinkle flowers, and exotic birds and butterflies. The intention of the Pantone Colour Award is to create a constant flow of conversation around colour and how it affects and impacts our daily life. This is a conversation that the Cornelius team is passionate about – whether as a cosmetic colour ingredient or when used as a natural colour product in skincare formulations.

Aquaphyline® from SILAB

Aquaphyline® is an active ingredient rich oligosaccharide sourced from wild pansies (Viola tricolor) that combats skin drying. The ingredient acts on two regulation mechanisms of water homeostasis in the stratum corneum, namely:

  • Irrigation: improves water circulation from the dermis to the epidermis by stimulating the synthesis of aquaporins-3 irrigation channels inserted in the lipid layer of cell membranes.
  • Retention: it increases the water-binding capacity of the epidermis by favouring the renewal of endogenous epidermal hyaluronic acid and the synthesis of its membrane receptor, CD44.

Aquaphyline® is excellent in maintaining this ideal equilibrium and is recommended for its intense immediate and long-term moisturising effect on the epidermis. It furthermore preserves the skin’s suppleness and prevents the appearance of wrinkles.

Blue Clay from Argile due Velay

Sourced from the clay-rich soils in France, mineralogical analysis proves that the Velay products are  extremely pure and  naturally composed of three different clays, namely Illite, kaolin and montmorillonite, with complementary properties. Argile du Velay’s blue clay is extracted from rich volcanic earth and features an impressive list of healing properties when used during skincare formulations. The final product is not subject to any chemical treatment and features no additives. The process is 100% natural and processed in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). It is also Natural Raw Material Ecocert & Cosmos certified.

Color & Effects Duocrome® Blue Violet BV 526C

Duocrome® Blue Violet BV 526C is a perfect fit for this year’s signature colour. Although not a natural blue, it does contain sustainably sourced mica mined from C&E owned mines in Hartwell in the US at the base. These pigments contain titanium dioxide-coated mica particles, which are coated with a thin layer of coloured pigment. The ability to develop hybrid products, which contain both natural and synthetic compounds, opens a wealth of new possibilities for ingredients used in colour cosmetics. Duocrome® iridescent colours are lustrous pigments that produce a distinctive two-colour look, creating striking effects in many cosmetics and personal care products.

The interplay between background and highlight colours in Duocrome® iridescent colours are unique and cannot be duplicated by any combination of interference pigments and conventional colourants, while Duocrome® Sparkle is an intense and lustrous pigment that adds a high degree of shimmer and two-tone colour to a broad range of cosmetics and personal care products.
